Character Brainstorming
Oct. 25th, 2011 08:07 pmBasically, a parody of Mahou Shoujo tropes and a not-very-secret jewel thief at the same time. Aoki is cheerful and easygoing and sees absolutely nothing wrong with periodically raiding jewellery stores or solving problems by lobbing a ton of magic at it. As she puts it, if you didn't want it solved that way why did you come to her? She'll never expect payment or ask for anything in return... she'll just steal something instead. Has a slightly warped moral code; ordinarily she's a nice, pleasant person... she just seems to see nothing at all wrong with thievery. Up to and including advising people she has just robbed to rob someone else to make up for their loss. This can and frequently does result in a 'chain of burglaries' where Aoki steals something off someone to replace something she stole off someone else, and so on...
Is also terrible at keeping and remembering promises and agreements. It really doesn't matter how serious it is, if Aoki cannot see any immediate danger she will just forget about it and try to do something else. For something short and quick, she'll do you fine but anything long term is going to turn into an absolute mess; she's completely unreliable. She has enough trouble remembering people's names. On the plus side, she does treat everyone completely equally. Because she has forgotten who they are.
Fairly obviously, the gem in her head is her source of power. Considering it won't come off, it may literally be in her head; Aoki's kinda hedgy about it. It's also the reason she's a jewel thief; all her magic tends to involve them in some way. Quite whether she is an android or a random magical girl DEEN just found somewhere is equally ambiguous. Certainly, she does at least partially seem to require jewels to some extent (though she is still a magpie of colossal proportions). Don't get Aoki started on her origin story; she'll spin you tales for hours...
Knows a lot about precious gems and stones, for obvious reasons.
In short, is cheery, willing to magically help you out, and highly likely to steal your watch. A very physical person; one part friendliness, one part frisking you.
Magical Abilities and Falderol
One part brainstorm, one part seeing how many crystal puns I can come up with. The most usual side effect of Aoki's abilities is that they don't go away afterwards; depending on the spell that can result in anything from wholesale diamond destruction to the VDR getting precious gemstones falling out the sky for the next week.
Crystal Rain
Aoki's most powerful technique, it literally involves calling down a crystalline hailstorm on the target. Also her least favourite... as it is equally literally involves lobbing her entire gem collection and she has to go and pick it all up again afterwards. Even then, it takes a somewhat wordy incantation... basically, Aoki would rather run away than have to use this one.
Diamond Shift
A powerful defensive technique; it literally involves creating a big wall of diamond wherever Aoki directs it. Sadly, as with most of Aoki's abilities, the diamond wall is made from her gem collection (though not all of it at once; only Crystal Rain does that) and will stay there after it has been generated. Whilst this can be effective, generally it makes it rather useless after it's been cast (Diamond walls being a little tricky to move), though she will occasionally use it for more mundane purposes. Like making little crystal gift sculptures. Can also be used to generate diamond weaponry, on a strictly 'if she has to' basis. A surprisingly useful and versatile ability... at everything except what it was originally intended for.
Crystal Clear
Literally turns Aoki to transparent crystal, making her nigh impossible to spot (and play merry havoc with lasers). Obvious downside is obvious; being crystal makes it impossible to move. Aoki is not fond of it, though can make some creative use of it. If you ever see a gemstone statue around, odds are it's Aoki using this trick to hide in plain sight.
More generally, Aoki can usually attempt to perform magic simply using her gem collection as a fuel source - whilst she won't mind doing it, she will expect said gems to be replaced (even if this involves pointing her to the nearest jewellery store so she can rob it), and she can usually achieve decent results. Though you do have to be very specific.
For the curious, Aoki does have a transformation sequence (yes, an official one), viewable here. VDR Aoki spends most of her time transformed anyway, but presumably when she isn't she's just in normal clothes (the gem headset is always there).
